On The Road to
. . . PASIC 2006

November 8-11
Austin, Texas

Otherwise known as "John and Bruce's Excellent Adventure!"

Monday, November 6

Bruce and John hit the road; heading for Nashville, Tennessee. Bruce's GPS navigation system is great!! A friendly voice instructs us when to turn and keeps track of our average speed and our official Estimated Time of Arrival.

We take one brief stop at a Cracker Barrel restaurant just off the Interstate.

We make it to Nashville by 4:45 pm. Dinner is at John's favorite pizza place, DaVinci's; where we hook up with Bill Wiggins, principal timpanist with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.

Tuesday, November 7

John and Bruce leave Nashville, Tennessee at 8:15 a.m. We take a 30 minute stop for lunch at a Ruby Tuesday's restaurant just outside of Little Rock, Arkansas.

John and Bruce hit Dallas at around 6:45 p.m. After checking-in, John communicates with Claire, Kathryn, and Carl via Apple's iChat. Very cool!

Wednesday, November 8

We arrive into Austin just before 1 pm and, lucky for us, our hotel rooms are ready. After a quick lunch we check out the convention center and figure out how we'll be loading John's timpani in for his Friday clinic - we're all set!

John's friend David picks us up and takes us to Ruth Chris steakhouse in downtown Austin. Great food!
(L to R: Bruce, John, Dean, David, and Keith)

Thursday, November 9

John spends some time with Sheryl Lee at the Carl Fischer booth. There are MANY copies of "The Working Timpanist's Survival Guide" and business looks good! By the end of the convention ALL books have been sold!

Steve Hearn, from Adams/Pearl, shows us Adams' new Schneller timpani; a design encouraged by Nick Woud, solo timpanist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

John spends some time with Lee Caron at the Grover Pro Percussion booth.

Friday, November 10

John's timpani clinic: "Plan B", is a terrific success! Over 800 people attend this wild presentation!

Saturday and Sunday, November 11 and 12

The Trip home .......

On our return trip we just HAD to stop at the SAME Ruby Tuesday's restaurant just outside of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Unfortunately, we hit a BAD traffic jam leaving Nashville.

Bruce quickly gets on his laptop (wireless connection to the internet) and researches the problem .....

We arrive, safe and sound, back in Northern Virginia at 6:30 pm on Monday, November 13th.
