Sunday, July 22

The 2007 University of Maryland Summer Percussion Workshop participants arrive in College Park, Maryland today. Every participant receives an official workshop notebook containing clinician's materials and other information.

Keith Aleo, director of educational and orchestral activities for the Avedis Zildjian Company presents a cymbal clinic this afternoon. Keith also serves on the music faculty at Boston Conservatory and Interlochen Arts Camp.


Monday, July 23

John Tafoya presents a timpani masterclass.

Tom Teasley presents a hands on world percussion clinic.

Workshop participants talk to Paul Yancich, principal timpanist for the Cleveland Orchestra via the internet.


Tuesday, July 24

Principal percussionist for the National Symphony Orchestra, Tony Ames presents a clinic covering 3-4 mallet techniques for challenging orchestral xylophone excerpts.

She-e Wu rehearses with workshop participants for this evening's recital.

This evening's performance will also feature Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion.

Members of the United States "President's Own" Marine Band present an informative clinic/recital featuring works by Russell Peck, Lou Harrison, and John Cage.


Wednesday, 7/25

She-e Wu coaches percussion ensemble repertoire which will be performed on Saturday.

Alan Abel presents an informative clinic covering orchestral snare drum technique and interpretation of orchestral excerpts.

She-e Wu presents a marimba clinic/masterclass.

The evening concludes with a special student recital featuring UM Summer Percussion Workshop scholarship recipients.


Thursday, July 26

Christopher Deviney presents a terrific orchestral percussion clinic this morning (photos coming soon ...).

The Talujon percussion quartet works with our participants this afternoon (photos coming soon ...).


Talujon member Michael Lipsey begins the UM Summer Percussion Workshop faculty recital this evening. The program also featured a new commissioned work by Peter Erskine entitled; "A Bird Sings". The work is dedicated to the memory of Mr. John Wyre.


Friday, July 27

John Kilkenny rehearses one of the ensembles which will be featured during our "Grand Finale" Concert (where all of our participants will perform) on Saturday at 3 pm.

Alan Abel returns to present a masterclass; covering a variety of orchestral percussion excerpts.

Fred Begun presents a timpani masterclass on standard orchestral timpani repertoire.

Drum set legend, Peter Erskine, works with a small group this afternoon. The 3 pm session will include all of the workshop participants.


Saturday, July 28

John Tafoya rehearses "Tip of the Andes" by Craig Hetrick during the workshop's dress rehearsal. Other works (Patrick Muchmore's "Phage", Daniel Levitan's "Conservatory Garden", Debussy's "Sunken Cathedral", and Christopher Rouse's "Ogoun Badagris") will be featured during the 3 pm "Grand Finale" concert.
